FERNANDO CAMPOMAR

“A personalized experience instills trust and confidence.”

Over his successful wealth management career, Fernando Campomar, CFA®, CFP®, RRC® has kept a keen eye out for ways to elevate his service and strengthen client relationships. Today, that means maintaining personalized client interactions and services while aligning his team in that same pursuit.

“When it comes to handling personal, family, and business finances, we know the people coming to see us expect a unique solution and a deep understanding of their situation,” says Fernando, Senior Financial Consultant with IG Wealth Management (IG). “We’ve built an excellent team here. We realized early on that people seeking advice place great value on that team approach that leverages specialized skill sets but also holds aligned priorities. We created a team that is primarily focused on our shared objective to make our client’s vision come to life.”

At this point in his career, many of Fernando’s client relationships have evolved into long-term partnerships built on years, even decades, of trust and expert performance. “To have a personal experience instills trust and confidence, leading people to become more hands-on in their finance management work with us,” he says. “We find they are increasingly more involved and these close relationships allow us to produce higher quality work.”

That realization came long before that level of client-specific service was common and sought out in the industry. “We have worked this way for many years and we knew intuitively it was the way to elevate our practice as far back as 2008,” says Fernando. “We were already working in multi- and intergenerational family planning. That philosophy and extended level of planning allow people to have a different timestamp on their wealth accumulation projects, the purpose of money, and the engagement they have in our ongoing planning and investing work. It transforms their relationship with that wealth as they accumulate while also planning for their legacy.”

Since then, Fernando has continued to enjoy the ideal balance in business momentum, family life, and the active living he craved early on. “Living and working in the Ottawa and Gatineau area is like finding a hidden jewel,” he says, adding that golf and skiing keep the family active year-round. “Our life here is friends, family, and sports, which allow us to rejuvenate after a great day’s work. I’ve been blessed to be welcomed with open arms across Canada. Our community is no longer defined by geography. We maintain a strong sense of community by having more personal touches. That might be going for dinner, attending events across the country, or having a laugh over a virtual meeting.”

In fact, Fernando is licensed to work with clients from Quebec, across the provinces as far west as B.C. and up to the Northern Territories. “My practice has taken me in a variety of directions that I never anticipated,” he says. “We have clients in all parts of the world.”

Fernando’s nearly 25 years of client-first, cross-border experience with IG has reinforced his belief that sound advice is built on both education and technical expertise. His professional designations — Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®), Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), and Registered Retirement Consultant (RRC®) — reflect his commitment to mastering every aspect of wealth management, integrating investment strategy, tax planning, retirement, and estate considerations into a single, coordinated approach. “That background guides me to help clients make confident decisions for their unique situations, and to support them and their families through every stage of life,” he says.

Also proud of his previous roles as Division Manager and Division Director for IG, where he worked to train, support, and mentor upcoming Consultants in his client-first spirit, Fernando places high value on continuous learning and passing it on. “My biggest personal accomplishment is not measuring the awards I’ve received,” he says. “It’s the expansive knowledge I’ve accumulated and then putting it into practice to serve the people who work with us – our team, our clients, and our industry. That’s why for me, those seemingly little letters – CFA, CFP, RRC – are so big.”

It’s that powerful combination of expertise that excites Fernando to work with the complexities that typically come with managing high net worth clients, including professionals, small business owners, and multi-generational families. Mostly long-term clients and their referrals, they are well-versed in the process and open to sharing all the detailed information required for planning success. “We make it clear from the start; we are not in a rush to sign our clients,” he says. “We have designed a slow and simple process intentionally so we can gain the deepest understanding of how their financial situation has evolved over time, and where it’s likely going.”

Fernando and his team can then develop the comprehensive financial plan with a long-lens focus. “This document addresses all areas of concern people may have, from how they manage their cash flow, to how they’re accumulating wealth, and how protected they and their families are,” he says, adding that the next step is to create a customized investment plan for each client. “By the time the client has approved our work, that’s when we consider the start of our relationship. Prior to formalizing that relationship, they understand all of the work and they know the level of service and results they can expect.”

As relationships and trust develop, the meaning of the work grows. Clients might experience challenges such as an unexpected health issue forcing early retirement. “I’ve had this happen to clients as young as 53,” says Fernando, adding that in one case, the clients had been with him since 2006. “When they are able to make such a big life change without a moment’s notice and feel reassured doing so with a comfortable income because we’ve made the right decisions along the way, that is a very rewarding day. The level of gratitude we get back from people because of our involvement in their family’s finances means so much.”

Working with people throughout the different stages of their lives, wealth planning, accumulation, retirement and legacy planning, Fernando enjoys seeing clients recognize the value they themselves have put into their successful financial journeys. “They appreciate when we outline instances where they need to put in a bit of work in their accumulation years and they recognize the hard work when they retire. They like that personal involvement of having in-depth reviews throughout the year to address evolving needs. You can imagine, when we create a financial plan, just 10 years out how much their life has changed.”

Those changes go beyond the initial client as Fernando and his team work with their next generations. He’s already working with the third generation in many cases, including adult grandchildren. “We worked with a successful business owner who built an entire industry in Canada but passed away several years ago,” says Fernando. “I was recently speaking with her 26-year-old granddaughter, one of the trustees we wrote into her will when we created it. The assets she inherited and the investments we’ve since made have been extremely successful. Now that she’s finished university without incurring any debt, she’s looking to us to organize and plan the next stage of her life and maximize her opportunities.”

It’s that ongoing work that keeps Fernando excited for the future. “Life is in constant motion,” he says. “People have advanced in their careers, their kids grew up, their education plans changed. An endless variety of things happen throughout a person’s life that are reflected in their finances.

“We’re always focused on what’s in front of us as planners, as we also plan for our own lives,” he adds. “We see a bright future ahead where we can help people navigate the increasing complexities in our world over the next 10, 20, 30 or more years. We’re not just planning for that person forced into retirement at 53. We’re planning for his next 40 years and beyond.”
