DAVID GALLAGHER
“Complexity is where we shine.”
After years focused exclusively on protecting clients’ wealth through insurance strategy, David Gallagher, CPCA®, Associate Consultant with IG Wealth Management (IG), now brings that experience to strengthen his team’s holistic wealth management offering. “My mission is to empower people to feel prepared and protected so they can focus on what matters most,” he says. “Our team helps financially successful people take the next step with confidence and peace of mind.”
He’s also building upon that foundation, expanding his mastery in insurance into estate, succession, and retirement planning, pursuing his Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation and learning from the varied experience of his fellow team members: Troy Morris, Senior Consultant, is 10 years older than David, Ben Ripley is 10 years younger, and Noah Larocque is 10 years younger than Ben. “We have a span of knowledge and life experience that apply to people at any life stage. That also provides continuity as the team supports clients and their next generations throughout their lives,” says David. “We’re all aligned in our commitment to really listening to what clients are challenged with and what they want to achieve. We come from a consultative approach rather than a sales mindset.”
Building long-term relationships, David’s approach is grounded in empathy. “I work to see and feel beyond the numbers,” he says. “I like to use my systems-thinking mindset to break down complex financial challenges and make them easy for clients to understand. It’s about giving them actionable steps they can easily apply.”
In taking that time to ensure clients understand, trust building is David’s daily priority. “Clients need to feel heard and prepared,” he says. “We communicate proactively so every interaction increases clarity and confidence. Letting them walk away confused is a major trust barrier. Our goal is to ensure they understand not only the strategy, but how deeply we’re invested in their success.”
As IG Wealth Management celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, it’s an exciting time for David to branch out and leverage the company’s many resources since his move over in early 2024. “We have innovative tools to support our clients and give them the personalized experience they need. As far as the back end, they know our service is supported by one of Canada’s most trusted financial institutions,” he says, adding that it was Troy, who had been with IG for 20 years, who eventually convinced David it was the right time to make the move after 12 years with his previous firm. “He actually had an insurance policy through my former firm. I went to see him to review his policy in 2019, and he suggested I come over to work with IG.”
As David had built his solo Advisor role from the ground up, it was a tough decision that took some time. “Troy kept in touch, and in late 2023 he asked, ‘Would you consider joining the practice and leading the Insurance Division?’” recalls David. “That was interesting to me so we met and talked, had a couple coffees, and the rest is history.”
Joining the established practice Troy’s worked hard to build, David is excited to help grow it forward. The change has been good professionally, but also at home. “It was a game changer for me,” he says. “It’s so important to be present with my family. I’m a husband to my wife Julie and a dad to two kids under 10 first. I’m able to be home for supper most nights and also balance out the massive responsibility my career holds with more family connection, self-care and active living.”
Living in suburban Blackburn, Ont., David and his family enjoy the close-knit community where neighbours say “hi” to each other and have community barbecues, along with the bustle of downtown Ottawa just 20 minutes away, a big advantage career-wise. “Ottawa is diverse and home to a lot of different family situations. Every day can be different, depending on the clients we’re seeing,” says David. “It’s big, but also small enough to have that community connection. During client interactions, you start talking, and there’s a connection there somewhere along the line.”
He also appreciates the charitable spirit of the city. “We’re big on giving back and community support here, particularly with the United Way and the Alzheimer’s Society,” says David. “For the financial services industry, I think as a whole, it’s important to let people know we’re giving back professionally, and in our own personal lives.”
Originally from the Pembroke/Upper Ottawa Valley and Pontiac area, David was raised on a cattle farm where although he enjoyed the work ethic farming instills, his father encouraged him to explore a career off the farm. “My dad always talked to me about integrity, especially in dealing with farmers and other people through a business lens – you never rush a farmer into anything without first earning their trust,” he says. “While I do love the farm and I like to go back and help out when I can, my father influenced my career path and because of his advice, here I am today.”
That path started with education, and it’s a lifelong pursuit. “I always want to be learning,” says David. “The financial landscape changes every day. If I’m a prospective client, I want to know my provider is on top of things, keeping up with what’s new and upcoming in the industry.”
Prior to his financial learning focus, David earned an honours degree in Physical Health Education, initially working in medical sales. “I saw there that having all the money in the world is great, but if you don’t have the health to enjoy it, what’s it all worth?” he says. “I’ve seen what it’s like when somebody goes into a nursing home or a long-term care facility. I used to help people get fitted for walkers or wheelchairs in those institutions and they’re not always the prettiest environment. That certainly evoked the ability to empathize with people, but I also started to see the ties between health in general and financial well-being.”
Which led David to complete his Certified Professional Consultant in the Aging (CPCA)® designation. “Aging and retirement are life events that will inevitably come down the pipe for all of us,” he says. “Taking the time to understand all the things these folks are going through is how we build connection. Continuing to earn these professional designations helps me to see things more clearly through the client’s perspective.”
Still, the legacy piece that goes hand in hand with farming carries through David’s work today. “Like a farmer wanting to pass the farm down, typically to the next generation, our work involves a lot of estate, succession, and tax planning complexities,” he says. “On our team, we love to work with anyone whose financial picture is highly nuanced, be it business owners, farmers, professionals, doctors, accountants, lawyers; there’s complexity there and that’s where we shine.”
While David and his team embrace intricate planning, investing, and advising scenarios, they aim to simplify things for clients. “I’m big on working through the costs and consulting people: ‘here’s what happens if you don’t do it; here’s what happens if you do,’” he says. “When I’m making a recommendation, ultimately the client decides to do it or to wait, but I’m planting a seed. Next year when I see them, maybe that seed has germinated and they’re in a better place to commit. By giving them all the information, they know I always have their back and I’ve laid out all the possible solutions without pressure.”
The team also tries to make the wealth management process fun for clients. “Money, especially insurance, can be dry,” says David. “It’s often the last thing somebody wants to talk about, sit down with their spouse or partner at the end of a week and say, ‘hey let’s talk about our finances or our insurance.’ People just don’t do it. So, we try to bring that to their attention in a way that’s impactful, but not always so serious.”
Working closely with clients, David’s got a strong pulse on current trends and challenges. “We’re seeing high levels of consumer debt as a large number of Canadians approach retirement,” he says. “We do a lot of retirement plans for pre- and post-retirees. A lot of the time, they have assets, they’ve accumulated their wealth, but now what? A lot of Advisors focus so much on the accumulation phase, but they don’t know how to plan for the de-accumulation phase. That’s where we have a real strong suit.”
In these sensitive cases, it’s helping people overcome uncertainty, even fear, that moves things forward. “People are scared they don’t have enough to retire. They’re unsure about their income sources and they’re having trouble envisioning how everything will play out,” says David. “We have a sophisticated financial software planning tool we use to illustrate all of this for them.”
Inputting each client’s income, expenses, and assets, the team reverse engineers a clear roadmap to clarify where the client is currently at, where they want to go, and how they’re going to get there. “In many cases, it’s ‘hey, you’re already there. Maybe you don’t need to have your investments in this high-risk portfolio; we can put it in a lower risk portfolio,’” says David. “This process gives them a visual plan and peace of mind. It’s great to see them have that ‘aha’ moment.”
As he’s protecting clients’ futures, David’s also planning his own as the team continues to grow. “Let’s continue to elevate the value we offer to clients, grow our reach, and deepen our relationships with business owners and families,” he says. “Let’s be the trusted partners for people as they navigate life’s financial complexities in the maze of modern financial planning.”
