CURTIS DUDLEY

"Planning for intergenerational success by understanding what matters to families."

Curtis Dudley, CFP®, FCSI®, and Financial Consultant with Dudley & Halik of IG Wealth Management’s Mutual Fund Division, has created an ideal balance that defines his practice. As he applies his technical wealth management and estate planning expertise to grow and protect client assets, he also makes time to appreciate the results of that work in person.

“Over the last 23 years, I’ve established deep relationships with clients and their families,” says Curtis. “Recently, an elderly high-net worth client called to say their car was in the shop and they needed a ride. I’m there on the spot, because these relationships are important to me. I enjoy taking clients to lunch, catching up, and asking: ‘is there anything I can do to help outside of our planning and portfolio work?’ It’s these little things we do that show our clients they matter beyond reviews and statements.”

Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ont., Curtis takes pride in serving the community he calls home. “It’s where I belong,” he says. “Being able to interact with and give back to the local community is something I value deeply.

Although that home has remained a constant, Curtis is proudly “open for business,” continuing to expand client base and services alongside his team, including associate, Anthony Halik, and executive assistant, Wendy Duce. “We work together to ensure the right planning is in place so clients can pass on their assets efficiently and support their families for the long term,” he says. “At the centre of that growth is our focus on humanizing what we do, ensuring it never gets lost in the numbers.”

That commitment to service excellence and client care traces back to his upbringing, watching his father and his grandfather work hard as self-employed denturists. “That’s where my own entrepreneurial spirit comes from, seeing the effort and passion they brought to their work,” Curtis recalls. “But I also knew early on that I wanted more control over my time and schedule.”

After earning his Business Administration Degree at Lakehead University in 2000, Curtis got his feet wet working with the Bank of Nova Scotia, gaining early experience on both the brokerage and retail sides of banking. “This gave me the opportunity to work with a lot of great mentors and build a strong foundation right away,” he says. “But working nine-to-five, time felt constrained. Meetings were short, and it often felt like there wasn’t enough room to go deeper with clients.”

An opportunity to build his own financial practice under IG Wealth Management (previously Investors Group) presented the opportunity Curtis wanted. “They offered the flexibility I was looking for. It wasn’t about watching the clock. I could sit with clients, really understand what mattered to them, and plan for the long term.”

But it wasn’t so simple starting from scratch. “You’re 25 years old and thinking, now where do we begin and move forward?” says Curtis. “This is where being surrounded by great mentors along the way was crucial. People like Herp Lamba, John Walas, or Brad Bonzzao were so generous with their time and experience. They sat down with me and said their doors were open. That’s what I really consider the beginning.”

Already having achieved his Business degree, Curtis held an appreciation for the elevating impact of continued education, earning his Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation as well as the prestigious Fellow of CSI (FCSI®). “This work is how I present myself to clients and showcase that I take the ethical side of this work very seriously,” he says. “Neglecting to do this work as an Advisor is a disservice to clients. They deserve our very best and, in my experience, that education is imperative.”

Meanwhile, building the practice meant years of sustained effort, with a turning point around year seven. “I really saw that blood, sweat, and tears come to fruition as we turned that corner. We saw the momentum take hold,” he says. “I knew I would never take that growth for granted. When I get to see I’m making a positive impact for people, it doesn’t matter if it’s Day One with them or Day 3,000, we never take for granted that massive responsibility we hold. That drive and motivation continues today when we look at where things are at, and where they’re going.”

Today, Curtis is licensed in both Ontario and Alberta, working closely with clients focused on long-term planning and intergenerational wealth transfer. “We’re experiencing more demand in elderly clients seeking personalized estate planning,” he says. “I like to develop a multi-generation ‘family tree’ as families evolve over time. Some of the most rewarding relationships are formed when people start out with trust because of the work we’ve done for their parents. That trust confirms we continue to do the right things.”

As those relationships evolve, so does the work. “What doesn’t typically change are those similar values passed on and that appreciation for all the hard work in building that wealth,” says Curtis. “There’s a natural progression in these relationships and we find a natural fit. I’m part of my clients’ lives, attending celebrations and funerals. I feel interwoven into their lives and there’s a lot of trust there.”

That trust is built through a planning-first approach. Senior clients with complex estates that include multiple properties must consider the next two or even three generations. “We’re looking at everything, from wills and real estate to tax-efficient strategies and charitable giving,” he says. “Too often, we see gaps in planning around probate or unexpected scenarios. Addressing and preparing for those proactively is critical.”

To deliver such comprehensive planning and detailed work, Curtis works closely with his internal team as well as a local circle of trusted professionals. “It’s about being surrounded by people who are just as passionate and committed to the client,” he says. “We make a point to stay connected outside of the office, even if it’s a simple monthly breakfast.”

That collaboration comes from decades’ experience in the industry and an understanding that everyone brings a unique specialty and perspective. “Asking for help isn’t a weakness, it’s how we deliver better outcomes. Letting the ego get in the way and trying to do everything alone doesn’t prove you actually know more,” says Curtis, who can access IG’s broader network of specialists in financial planning, tax, law, and insurance anytime. “I believe the opposite. I have my own knowledge, but leveraging the right expertise when needed is critical to serving clients properly.”

For example, Curtis and his team recently developed and presented a strategy involving the implementation of a charitable foundation for a client, coordinating across multiple specialists to address estate structure, tax efficiency, risk management, and long-term impact. “We bring all those resources to the forefront to build on the comprehensive living plan and explain everything so clients can clearly understand,” he says. “That depth of support makes a real difference.”

As he works to support clients’ charitable giving, Curtis also reflects that commitment personally through philanthropic involvement, including support for the Alzheimer Society and other local initiatives. “Giving back is important, both individually and as part of IG,” he says.

Outside the office, Curtis recharges through travel, time with friends, and staying active. “What I love about Thunder Bay is the balance,” he says. “You can be deeply connected to the community, and within 40 minutes, be at camp, ready to unwind for the weekend. Of course, right by my side is my wife, Jennifer. Without her ongoing support I couldn’t have achieved, and continue to build, this career I love.”

Natalie Noble’s love of writing stems from her passion for hearing and sharing people’s stories. Over the years, she has written for various business, real estate, and agriculture publications. At the heart of her work is a desire to continuously learn and connect.
