“Unifying business and personal wealth. How the CLEAR FrameworkTM aligns financial strategy.”

In the demanding world business owners and professionals navigate, who has time to oversee the multiple, complex, and ever-changing components of their professional and personal finances? Together, Amrit Lalli CFP®, CIM®, B.Comm, and Dan Greco CFA, CFP®, B.A. (Hons.), have come to deeply understand the challenge, step up to it, and solve it with clarity using their own CLEAR FrameworkTM.

“We have found through extensive experience and communication with clients that they don’t have time to project manage their own finances,” says Dan, Senior Wealth Advisor, Associate Portfolio Manager, Lalli Greco Wealth Management of Richardson Wealth. He adds that he and Amrit especially enjoy working with business owners and tackling the unique scenario of aligning their professional and personal finances for strategic gain. “We become their coordinating professional, similar to an architect coordinating a construction project, bringing together the right professionals and ensuring every piece works toward the same objective.”

“To do this effectively as a team, our CLEAR FrameworkTM is a way for us to package our wisdom in a way that unites our processes and invites the client into the process and expertise as well,” adds Amrit, Senior Wealth Advisor, Associate Portfolio Manager, Lalli Greco Wealth Management of Richardson Wealth. “They can take that wisdom and manage parts of their finances themselves. Or, we can implement the full cycle on their behalf. We have something to offer, it’s valuable, and we’re happy and willing to share that.”

That enthusiasm to share their wisdom and experience comes as a result of long, successful careers in the business. “Both of us started in our early 20s. This is the only career we’ve known since university,” says Dan. “It’s not an easy career to start and achieve success. But over time, if you stick with it and work hard, you start seeing successes and wins with your clients, their businesses, and their families, and that is confirmation that you’re doing good work.”

“When I started out in this business after graduation, I knew I didn’t want to work with just computer screens, numbers, or spreadsheets,” says Amrit. “I wanted to work with other people – have meaningful interactions with colleagues and clients. As time has gone on over the decades, it developed into something bigger, as Dan said. And here we are now.”

Landing at Richardson Wealth, “here,” is the result of leaving a large national firm after 25 years each – bringing over 50 years’ combined experience – in search of independence, innovation, and growth through the firm’s support. It’s allowed them to create a practice that meets their vision for the future. “A few years ago, we decided to join forces and move on to an independent firm,” says Dan. “For Amrit and I, there were many good reasons. There’s a synergy when we work together. We share the same values and work ethic. And we wanted to offer our clients a lot more choice. Richardson Wealth reflected those values and gave us what we wanted in order to elevate our client services. We want to continue to build and grow our practice and our services.”

Seeing and doing with clarity

Central to that growth is their belief in the CLEAR FrameworkTM they designed together and put to use every day. Within the framework, all components of comprehensive financial planning and wealth management are covered. “C” is working to organize Corporate and Personal Structure intentionally for gains such as tax efficiency and reduced complexity. “L” is Lifetime Tax and Liquidity Planning that focuses on tax efficient strategies like dividend, redemption, or business sale planning, and cash flow. “By integrating business and personal planning, we create efficiencies within tax and liquidity planning where they’re often lost when kept separately,” says Amrit.

“E” is Exit and Succession Strategy, including continuity and transition plans and flexible exit options. “A” is Asset Protection and Risk Management for both business and personal assets, including estate and cross-border services. “R” covers Retirement and Legacy Integration. It’s the planning to integrate wealth to meet today’s needs and achieve future goals, including financial freedom, legacy planning, and philanthropic endeavours. “At these stages, our focus on complete financial planning shines,” says Amrit. “Here, we go way beyond investments, which tends to be where many advisors begin and end.”

While the CLEAR FrameworkTM is the foundational philosophy of their work, it’s also tangible, creating a clear path forward, and results that are seen in real life and real time. “Here’s your CLEAR FrameworkTM. This becomes the reference point we use going forward,” says Amrit. “Your Advisor team, internally with us and with your external partners, will use this roadmap to keep all your financial pieces working together to achieve your goals and protect your financial wellbeing. It’s a process of seeing where you are now and putting that down on paper in collaboration with all the other Advisors. We coordinate all these moving parts to ensure we all know exactly where you are, where you’re going, and what you want to accomplish financially – professionally and personally. The CLEAR FrameworkTM brings it all together.”

That collaboration priority is important, particularly when working with business owners and professionals who already have trusted Advisors in place for various services but perhaps struggle with each service being segmented or siloed. “We are not here to replace anybody,” says Amrit. “We’re here to collaborate with the established professionals – the private banker, accountant, or lawyer – already supporting the client.”

The CLEAR FrameworkTM is also an effective driver of discipline and diligence when it comes to decision making. “There’s no one thing that will be earth-shattering. But there are small incremental changes we can make today that lead to significant results in 10 years, and then grow beyond,” says Dan. “The CLEAR FrameworkTM guides us as we work to pick up on those little things that can make a big difference over the long term, essentially identifying the gaps and the opportunities. Then, the exciting part is adding that all up. In isolation, each change might not seem like a lot, but in aggregate, they become very significant.”

Amrit agrees. “In all our experience, it’s not the big decisions that people make in their life, such as buying a certain investment, or taking a certain strategy. It’s the incremental little things that go a long way to create a big difference in the end. This is foundational to what we do within this process,” he says. “We want people to know that taking this leap of faith can be life changing. We’ve helped a lot of business owners and families, and we can help you realize your dreams too.”

It takes a team

Delivering a process as comprehensive as the CLEAR FrameworkTM requires more than two Advisors. It takes a team capable of supporting every stage of the client journey. “We’re proud to have an experienced team who will assist you at every step of the process, from making you feel comfortable in the office, to guiding you through the process, and adjusting where needed as life happens,” says Amrit.

With Amrit and Dan at the helm, the team has depth, experience, and familiarity with each client. There’s always someone prepared to help. For efficiency, each team member has their role so all bases are covered.

Tracey Cottrell, our Assistant and Team Coordinator, is front and center because she’s working directly with the clients, booking them in and keeping ongoing communication through emails or calls,” says Amrit. “We also have Kirsten Critchley, our Assistant and Team Coordinator. She’s instrumental behind the scenes in working with the clients and making sure that everything is taken care of.”

Adding experience to the team is Associate Wealth and Investment Advisor, Matthew (Matt) Copleston, CFP®, CIM®. “Matt specializes in comprehensive financial planning for business owners and families, bringing our team over a decade of experience,” says Amrit. “His experience in working with other major financial firms in Canada adds valuable insight so as a team, we bring our best to the business owners we engage.”

Meanwhile, Associate Investment Advisor, Kelsey White, B.Comm. – currently pursuing her Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) designations – is focused on financial planning, investment management, and insurance protection. “Kelsey’s expertise and personal connection to clients is integral to the success of the team and boosts client engagement,” says Amrit.

Associate Mackenzie Bowman, CPA, B.Sc, brings a public accounting background and is working towards his CFP®. “Because Mackenzie is a Chartered Public Accountant, his knowledge and real-life experience from his accounting experience is critical when we integrate clients’ business and personal finances,” says Amrit.

Grateful for the team’s support, Amrit and Dan give each high praise. “If you take one of them out, our services don’t work at this elevated level we insist on,” says Amrit. “Everybody has an equal part in our success.”

Purpose is always on the horizon

While clearly holding the technical and industry expertise to handle the most complex scenarios when aligning all aspects of clients’ business and family financial needs and goals, it goes far beyond the numbers and dollars for Amrit and Dan. “The intent of our work is to go beyond concerns like profit-loss-and-earnings,” says Amrit, asking questions to get to the heart of what matters. “You’ve created this company, this business, the assets. How do those assets work with your personal assets? What is the overall intent in the end? Why are you doing it all? Is it to make sure that charities get money? Is your goal to create financial security for future generations? Do you want your family to take over the business? Do you want to sell it and travel?

“It’s about getting down to the real reason somebody would build a business,” he adds. “Many times, people haven’t even thought about what they’re going to do with it after all that hard work. That’s where the CLEAR FrameworkTM shines.”

The duo is also passionate about delivering financial literacy to their clients along the journey. “We get a lot of joy when we take something that may be complex to the client, and we put it into terms they understand,” says Amrit. “To have them say, ‘thank you, now we’re going forward with confidence instead of being confused,’ that means so much. We want to ensure people understand why we’re doing things when we work together as partners.”

They also thrive in the variety that comes day-to-day. “Sometimes we’re watching growth happen slowly and steadily; sometimes the unexpected or unplanned occurs – a death, disability, or divorce,” says Dan. “At the end of the day, we simply love seeing our clients live their best lives. Our goal is to see clients retire and have financial security beyond their dreams; that they don’t have to worry about money; that they can say, ‘wow, this is a great day,’ every day.”
