KEVIN J SAMPSON, CFP®, RRC®, CEA, FINANCIAL CONSULTANT, IG WEALTH MANAGEMENT (IGWM) OTTAWA, ONTARIO

KEVIN SAMPSON

“Keep the Best and Change the Rest”

New York Times Best-Selling Author, Dr. Frank Lipman, once said, “…health is more than merely the absence of disease. It is a total state of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social well-being.” Financial health is the same.

Financial Consultant and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® Professional, Kevin Sampson, believes that “Financial success is the result of balancing the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social aspects of money and multi-generational wealth.”

Kevin has been improving the physical, mental/financial, emotional and social well-being of retirees, near retirees, business owners, professionals, and their families in the National Capital Region for more than three decades now.

“It is wonderful to be associated with a company that has been advising Canadians for more than ninety years. Recently, our parent company, Power Financial Corporation, has implemented exciting corporate/cultural business model changes while building upon the same personal consultant services and ethics that are already in place,” Kevin adds.

Motivational Speaker, Zig Ziglar reminds us that, “It takes energy, mental toughness and spiritual reinforcement to successfully deal with life’s opportunities and to reach your objectives.” Kevin believes that because he has always operated in accordance with Ziglar’s time-tested principles, he consistently receives high scores in IGWM’s Gallup Survey.

“Our multi-generational practice has grown organically from referrals. For example, retired school teachers, Pete and Jane, and their three sons, Mathew, Michael and Jeffrey, are all clients. I was introduced to Jane’s parents, Earl and Dorothy, through Dorothy’s sister, Bette, who taught with my mother. Eventually Bette’s sister and brother-in-law, their daughter Jane and her husband and their three sons also decided to work with us. We work with many families such as these,” Kevin adds.

“Today, both of Jane’s parents are deceased. Her father, Earl, died about five years ago and his estate was settled quickly and cost-effectively. Dorothy passed on New Year’s Day. The final settlement of Dorothy’s estate is taking place this year. When she was alive, Dorothy told me that she was very pleased with how little she was required to pay for fees thanks to stickhandling by her accountant, Alvin, and myself.”

Two of Jane’s three sons work in the USA. “Although I may not be able to provide them with financial products, that does not stop us from talking about financial planning concepts. I love being able to make a difference.”

“In recent years my friend Cam, a retired Superior (Tax) Court judge, came to me with small account – his RIF was managed elsewhere. He had already set up a real estate portfolio for family members. To that extent I am a valued advisor, and appreciate that he is not shy about speaking publicly of the confidence and feeling of security that he has in doing business with me,” Kevin adds.

Philosophy & Approach

Without energy, mental toughness, gratitude, and a clear success roadmap, it is almost impossible to consistently perform at such a high level. Self-awareness is key.

According to Kevin, “My three key business drivers, or in Steven Covey terms, my Context Goals, are:

1) To build a life of robust prosperous anonymity.

2) To build my business with gratitude and constant client appreciation.

3) To be a leader and a standard for the financial planning profession in how I represent IGWM and the industry.

My personal Key Drivers are:

1) Spiritual truth.

2) Health

3) Love and

4) Wealth.

Everything I do supports my personal and business drivers.”

Kevin believes that IGWM thinks about wealth differently than other organizations. “Life is constantly changing and evolving. We think of clients’ financial plans like living documents that adapt to, reflect, and respond to life’s changes. We are always committed to providing the right information and advice at the right time so that clients can feel confident about the future.”

“I attribute much of my success to my ability to focus on holistic retirement income distribution planning and aligning everything with intergenerational estate planning. My professional designations, including CFP®, Certified Executor Advisor, and Registered Retirement Consultant® coupled with more than three decades of on-the-ground experience, a client focused philosophy, and access to a team of IGWM specialists allow me to deliver confidence and peace of mind,” Kevin says.

“We help clients understand how the decisions they make today, impact their future abundance. We present strategies that help clients reduce, defer, and avoid unnecessary taxation, determine the cost of their desired retirement lifestyle and help them build a larger retirement pay cheque if need be,” Kevin adds.

“We work with clients to constantly re-evaluate their priorities, to instill the right savings routine, and to identify all possible sources of retirement income - there may be more than clients realize. We explore options and recommend solutions that help clients maximize the value of their estate, while ensuring beneficiaries will receive everything clients have planned for them.”

Kevin would not be nearly as effective if he didn’t have the support of others including Dave Harris. Dave originally joined IGWM in 2016. After graduating with a B.Com from the University of Ottawa, Dave worked for Canada Revenue Agency for a short time. Although he loved the industry, he found the work with a big government agency unfulfilling.

“He works the software like a maestro directs an orchestra. This is his third year working with me and we are known as the Dynamic Duo. Clients love him. As an added bonus, Dave introduced me and my wife, Hélène, to the sport of pickleball which we are enjoying greatly.”

Because Kevin is committed to lifelong learning, he also has his own business coach. “Coach Ray Sclafani of Client Wise has a great relationship with IGWM, and provides training to IG staff and individual Consultants such as myself.”

Up Close & Personal

Kevin is five years away from starting a staged retirement, which means succession planning is an important part of his business planning. A key part of his plan is to partner with someone who can continue servicing his clients to the standard he has established. If you would like to know more, please email him directly at Kevin.Sampson@ig.ca.

In terms of giving back, Kevin has created a legacy in the arts, education and health care in the Ottawa area (www.nac-cna/foundation, www.ohfoundation.ca and www.carleton.ca/cognitivescience). Until recently, he was also on the Finance Committee at Notre Dame Cathedral.

Kevin describes himself as a cradle Catholic and met his new bride, Hélène, a retired school teacher, and part-time faculty at St. Paul University, at church. The couple married in October 2018 and honeymooned at Mount Tremblant. Had COVID not intervened they would have travelled to Switzerland this past May.

Like Ray Kroc of McDonalds fame, Kevin believes that we are better together than we are apart. “No one of us is as good as all of us.” His personal and professional priorities have always been informed by his personal and business drivers.

“Despite COVID, these are wonderful times to be alive. I’m reinventing myself much like what I ask my clients to do, I’m keeping the best and changing the rest. On so many levels, it feels like I’m a rookie again. Life doesn’t get any better than that,” Kevin concludes with a smile.
